Description

Bali Blue Moon is a beloved single-origin Arabica coffee grown in Bali’s volcanic Kintamani Highlands at elevations of roughly 1,200–1,600 m. Cultivated by smallholder farmers organized within traditional Subak Abian cooperatives—rooted in the Balinese Tri Hita Karana philosophy—it’s organically grown using no synthetic pesticides and sustainably irrigated.

The beans undergo Indonesia’s hallmark wet-hulling process, or Giling Basah, which leaves them with a distinctive bluish-green hue and contributes a rich, earthy backbone and syrupy body. Typically dark roasted, this coffee develops luscious notes of dark chocolate, cedar, peat moss, and maple syrup, with some roasters—and home brewers on Reddit—detecting hints of tobacco, molasses, or black licorice.

Despite its bold profile, Bali Blue Moon balances intensity with smoothness. Enthusiasts describe it as "full body, rich chocolate notes that compete with strong tobacco notes and a long and lingering aftertaste", and it’s praised for shining both black and with milk—many home roasters prefer pulling it just into second crack to highlight its chocolatey sweetness.

Whether brewed via French press, drip, or espresso, Bali Blue Moon offers a velvety, satisfying cup—complex yet approachable—perfect for those craving a dark-roast experience that’s robust, layered, and authentically Balinese.

Fun Fact about Area

It's home to a monkey forest where monkeys have their own royal temple!

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud is not just a lush jungle teeming with over 1,000 long-tailed macaques—it also houses three ancient Hindu temples, one of which, Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, is considered a spiritual protector of the village. The monkeys roam freely and are believed by locals to guard the sacred site, making it one of the few places where humans and monkeys share religious space in harmony. Just watch your snacks and sunglasses—they’re clever little thieves!

Roasting Level

Full City + ~425 - 435 °F, 218 - 224 °C (Medium-Dark)

Pulling a roast during the first few snaps of 2nd crack is sometimes called "Full City+". It's not quite dark enough to be called Vienna yet, but it's just past Full Medium. For some folks this is just right. There may be a few flecks of oil on the beans. There should still be a fair balance between origin and roasty flavors as well as a touch more body. There will also be less acidity if that is desired.
